I’ve recently discovered my love for Subway. When I was younger I’d go every once in a while because someone else wanted to go. But on a recent outing with my son… oh, say five months ago, I switched up what I normally got and discovered ~Que angels singing~ Italian Herb and Cheese bread.

Now I go at least once a week. It’s getting to the point where the employees recognize me… I’d say I’m embarrassed, but I’m not. What I am embarrassed about is that when I go, I can’t say six inch or foot long with a straight face.
But that’s neither here nor there.
On a recent visit, there was a guy, probably in his early twenties, who got himself a sub and another one for who I assumed was his girlfriend. I was behind him in line and thought it was just the cutest thing ever. He knew her order without having to look at anything or text and ask her. Well, fast forward a couple weeks later, and he was there with a girl (again, assuming it was his girlfriend), and I was behind them in line. He ordered his and she ordered hers and they sat at a booth and ate their sandwiches together.
Well, in that moment, guess what struck me? Story idea?! You betcha!
And another week later, a construction worker was ahead of me shamelessly flirting with the girl behind the counter, and I couldn’t help but imagine what would happen if she gave into him. Did he come to this particular shop to see her? Was he just waiting for a chance where he could ask her out? What if they ended up going out on a date?
Another story idea? √
The best one was when I was behind an elderly couple with my husband. They ordered a sub to split, and painstakingly slowly went down the line and consulted with each other about each meat/vegetable/dressing. The girl behind the counter gave me a sympathetic smile, and I shook my head and said, “It’s totally fine.” And I meant it. I enjoyed watching that couple, it’s heartwarming to see and I hope to be the elderly couple that takes forever in line with my husband some day.
And guess what, a totally cute story idea… maybe the epilogue to the construction worker and the girl behind the counter, maybe it’s their special place and they go there every year on the day they met?
These are the kinds of things that run through my head continuously (along with a plethora of other stuff… the joys of being a writer!). These are the kinds of inspirations that put emotion into my stories, or at least I hope they do.
I love all different kinds of romance… the unobtainable billionaire, the ex-Navy SEAL, the damaged playboy, the Mafia king, the biker, they are all SO fun to read about. But the ones I love the most are the real ones. The ones where you can picture true and real love happening right in front of you in the most unexpected places… even Subway.
